The composer Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) was a member of the staff at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich from 1957-74. The foundation he established is his artistic legacy. The aims of the foundation are the study and examination of Harald Genzmer's work, and the promotion and support of new music, composers, interpreters and musicologists. In 2016 the Harald Genzmer Foundation in association with the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich was holding the Harald Genzmer Interpretation Competition for the first time. The competition aims to encourage the study of Harald Genzmer's musical output, and to support young musicians. 

Competitors
The competition is open to duos consisting of one violin and piano. Competitors may be of any nationality. Competitors must be students or junior students aged between 12 and 28 years old (key date 20.10.2020). Direct relatives and spouses of jury members are excluded from the competition.

Requirements / Competition
The competition takes place on 20 October 2020 in the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. It will be held in one round. The following is required:
• Compulsory piece: The first and the second movement from Harald Genzmer's Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano (1949) GeWV 224
• Another piece by Harald Genzmer chosen from the accompanying repertoire list (separate movements from different pieces are not wanted, but it is possible to play just one or two movements from one piece).
• The performance duration should be not longer than 17 minutes (including compulsory piece).
Competitors should apply by submitting a recording of themselves performing the compulsory piece via YouTube link. The jury will decide in a selection process which applicants are eligible for the competition.

Prizes
Up to three prizes may be awarded. The first prize is 4,000 Euros, second prize 2,500 Euros and third prize 1,500 Euros.

Competitors are requested to submit the following link by email:
• a YouTube link with a recording of the compulsory piece
If any of these documents or links is missing, the applicant cannot be considered for the competition.

Closing date for applications

Announcement of candidates selected for the competition
The announcement of candidates selected for the competition will be made on the websites of the Foundation and the University directly after the jury's decision May 2020.

Competition
The competition takes place on 20 October 2020 in the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (see above).

Prizewinners' concert
The prizewinners will receive their awards in a Prizewinners' Concert at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich on 21 October 2020. This will also include the premieres of the prizewinning works in the Harald Genzmer Composition Competition and the Composition Competition for »Spielmusik«, which takes place at the same time as the Interpretation Competition, given by students of the piano-classes. Prizewinners in that competition will also receive their awards.
Prizewinners are required to take part in the prizewinners' concert. The order of the programme will be decided by the jury.

Further conditions of entry
No fee is payable to any competitor for photographs or recordings made during the competition. The jury's decisions are irrevocable. There is no legal entitlement for the enforcement of claims in connection with this competition, nor in the event that it is cancelled or the prizewinners' concert does not take place. By submitting a recording via the YouTube link, competitors acknowledge these rules.
